I usually try to base my blog ideas around topics that couples either request, or questions that I am often asked, is the walking down the aisle aspect at the commencement of the ceremony, as well as the giving away.
Traditionally of course the father of the bride has walked his daughter down the aisle to be greeted by her groom. Nowadays brides and grooms have the option to walk alone, with both parents or another chosen support person or to walk with their child or children (which is a frequent choice with subsequent marriages where children are already part of the family). This custom originates from days of old when brides were exchanged in return for a bride price or dowry paid to the groom, as a result of her being considered, until her marriage, as the property of her father.
Some may call it old fashioned and for many a quintessential modern bride being ‘given away’ goes entirely against their ethos, however it remains in my experience, a still much loved inclusion for a daughter to acknowledge or honour the love of her father and something dads definitely love doing!
This is the wonderful part about modern Sunshine Coast and Noosa weddings and choice. As long as the essential legal elements are included, brides and grooms literally have free rein to choose any aspect of the ceremony they wish, guided by their celebrant of course, who will have a good idea of the format that will be successful!
It is also a lovely addition to include a verbal part following this prior to the legalities commencing asking ‘Who brings the bride to be married to the groom? This may be addressed to the father, both parents, all 4 parents, or even quite commonly now, all the guests and requesting that they offer the couple their love and support.
Noosa and Sunshine Coast Elopements regularly eliminate this part with the bride and groom simply strolling in to their waiting guests hand in hand which symbolises the bond they already share and is perfect and fitting for an elopement or simplicity style wedding.
